Our Story
Get to Know Us
The LYC was founded in 2010 by Robert and Fiona Boyce. There has been a boat club on the river since 1872.
Robert Boyce's family have lived and worked on the River Arun for over 100 years. His great grandfather, William Osborne, founded William Osborne’s and the Arun Shipyard over 100 years ago. In its era, Osborne’s built over 100 lifeboats, 100s of RIBS and numerous pilot vessels employing over 100 people from the local area. The business had workshops on both the East and West banks of the River Arun, and you can still see Osborne's signs today.
Robert is still very involved in the River Arun. He was treasurer for the River Arun User Group for many years, and was Vice Chairman of the Littlehampton Harbour Board for 4 years and is an active supporter of the heritage and regeneration of the area.
Sadly, the RNLI moved all its production to Devon. Osborne’s later joined forces with Cougar to become Cougar Osborne and, until quite recently, produced fast attack boats for the Middle East and Nigeria.
